CFL 10: Results and Review

Being quite new to the fighting scene (only discovered my love for the sport in 2 or 3 years ago) I was very nervous, yet excited to cover for BoxingBarbie at Cape Fight Leage 10.

The night got off to a very humorous start with a very comedic MC, however, he kept the crowd entertained successfully during the fights. Nobody got killed with laughter, no cause for concern there. There were impressive fights from the start,  as the night progressed, it just got more and more entertaining and “action packed” would be an understatement.

Fight Of The Night:
Joshua Ignjatovic (Panther) vs. Juan Lagrotteria-Joubert (REPS) for the CFL LightWeight MMA Super AM Title

Both men seemed hyped and prepared to give the fight of their lives! This fight mostly remained a stand up fight, throughout each round, with good solid punches thrown from either side.

Towards the end of each round the crowd applaud at the entertaining and massive display of action these two provided.

They had everyone questioning whether or not they could go another round of literally beating each other? Well, it lasted all 5 rounds (have mercy) and only in the last two rounds were there attempted take down and near choke holds, but neither had the strength to hold the other down. These guys were both determined to take the W and the belt. With all fights (or most) there can only be one winner and that was unanimously decided by the judges to be Joshua Ignjatovic.

In Ignjatovic's brief post fight interview he remarked that he was prepared for the fight of his life!! Ignjatovic went on to say that he was given a good fight by Juan, but he would not be giving up his belt very easily, concluding with “the next guy better be ready for war!!”.

Two short fights worth a mention, by its impressive endings:

Hermias Drotschie (REPS) vs Frans Steyn (Monkey Militia)
Early take down and little grappling and scuffling before Drotschie goes for ground and pound, probably three servings of GNP, before the ref called the fight.

Wade Hendersen (Independent) vs Karl Bergemann (Thaiholics)
This fight was so short I don’t even think it went past the 20 second count. Bergemann came out with heavy punches before effortlessly putting Wade to sleep!

The only words I uttered throughout the night were “WOW” and the odd “YOH”. Successful and huge appreciation to Cape Fight League organisers and match selectors for an awesome, fun filled evening! On to the next one! Too amped!

Fighters For A Cause

Always keen to help those in need, we received a message from Fidaah Edries, owner at Fighterz Inc.

FIGHTERZ INC. MMA and Sports Conditioning Academy started in 2014 as a community Kickboxfit Boot camp, as well as an intervention to keep youth-at-risk busy with constructive activity whilst teaching them Respect, Discipline and Commitment through martial arts.

The members’ skills in Kickboxing developed and they requested to enter competitions as fighters. The first competition entered was on April 4, 2015 and resulted in 4 wins out of 4 entries!! Our fighters then entered subsequent competitions and for the year, thus far we have had a total 9 wins and only 1 loss. The need for a full fledged gym then arose and this is where we are today. Our head trainer, Cristiano Ndombassy is ranked third in boxing, in his division in South Africa at the moment, and is also one of the best in Kickboxing/K1.

We are committed to excellence in our training and execution.

At the moment we offer Kickboxfit HIIT cardio classes, for those who want to tone, become fit and lose weight in a fun way. We also offer advanced Kickboxing and Muay Thai classes, instructed by Cristiano as we have a major focus on fighter development.

Our edge, is that we offer our clients as well as our fighters’ individual attention and focus, toward achieving their goals. We are the only gym at which Cristiano trains fighters.

We also offer mental coaching/conditioning to fighters, vital in the development of a successful fighter.

We work and compete as one team- one family. A core focus would always be to work with youth-at-risk free of charge as we feel that it to be our moral obligation.

Seeking Sponsorship for Youth-at-Risk

We are currently working with 8 youth-at-risk. They are aged 11 to 22 years of age and are predominantly from a place in Athlone called the “Vlei”. This area is ridden with gangsterism, drug addiction, school dropouts, teenage pregnancy etc. Mixed Martial Arts has proven to be a very successful intervention for these youth. As a pre-requisite to be able to do our classes, the youth have to remain in school and show consistent hard working qualities. In return, we offer them free tuition, life skills and counselling support as well. Not only are they able to make personal improvements, academic improvements, but they also show great potential in their martial arts training.
However, they need sponsorship in the form of sporting equipment: wraps (R90), boxing gloves (R350), mouth guard (50), shin pads (R400), groin guard (R300), jujitsu GI (R1000).

If anyone could assist in any way (including forwarding this to respective sponsors) it would be much appreciated.

Yours in youth development and martial arts
